BeerChooser: FAQs
About BeerChooser

As beer lovers, we’ve sometimes found it difficult to navigate the seemingly endless options now available to beer drinkers. BeerChooser hopes to eliminate some of the guesswork, giving you personalized beer recommendations based on what you’ve liked in the past.

By ratings beers, you teach BeerChooser what you like and what you don’t like, creating a profile of your taste. Based on the ratings of other BeerChooser users, you get recommendations tailored specifically to your preferences.

BeerChooser also allows you to create a list of favorites and a wishlist of beers you want to try. We created these tools due to the countless times we’ve found ourselves staring at a wall of beer, unable to remember which beers we liked and which we’ve been meaning to try. Your BeerChooser “Favorites” and “Wishlist” can be printed out or accessed from a mobile internet device to help guide you through your beer choices.

With each beer you’ve rated, BeerChooser gives you the option of writing comments or a review of the beer. There’s no pressure, but if writing some notes helps you remember why you liked or disliked something, then go for it. You can also see other people’s comments about beers, with the percentage of beers you agree on next to their ratings. That way you can weight their comments based on the similarity of your tastes.

When you are reviewing a beer, you have the option to add up to 7 "tags" to your review. You can use these tags to describe the beer, note the beer's pros and cons, indicate the particular season or occasion that the beer would be most appropriate for, or whatever else would be useful to you. You can think of tags as one-word summaries of your review.

The most popular tags for a particular beer will appear above the reviews on a beer's page, along with the number of people that added that tag to the beer. This gives a brief overview of what most reviewers thought of the beer before you read the specifics of the reviews. Tags that you frequently use in your reviews will appear on your profile page for other BeerChooser members to see, under the "Tags" tab.

Next to beer reviews and on other BeerChooser members' profile pages, you may have noticed the "% Like You" number. This number tells you how similar your beer taste is to this member's. A higher percentage means you have similar taste in beer to this member, and you might want to put more faith in their beer reviews than reviews by a member who prefers very different types of beer. The higher the number, the more likely it is that you would give the same ratings to the same beers as this member.

Clicking to highlight the yellow star next to a beer adds it to your Favorites list. Use this list to keep track of your all-time top beers, or your reliable go-to standards. To remove a beer from your Favorites list, click again on the yellow star to un-highlight it. Your Favorites list also shows up on your profile for other BeerChooser members to see.

Clicking to highlight the check box next to a beer adds it to your Wishlist. Use this list to keep track of beers you're excited to try. To remove a beer from your Wishlist, click again on the check box to un-highlight it. Your wishlist also shows up on your profile for other BeerChooser members to see.

The yellow beer mugs show the rating you gave to a beer. The brown mugs show how BeerChooser thinks you'll rate a beer you haven't tried yet. Rate more beers to teach BeerChooser about your taste and improve the accuracy of your recommendations!
